Description

This is one of the 7 reeeeally belated gifts I've been working on for various awesome people. (Yeah, I know... pretty obvious who this one is for. :shh:)
I don't know if anyone is interested in seeing a WIP/semi-step-by-step type of thing from me... but I figured I'd post it, since everything I'm working on right now is pretty much stuck in this kind of state. I chose this pic from the 7 mainly because it was very tame, and could be posted at my other galleries... and its been nagging me the most!

Anyway, this is how it goes...

1. Pencil sketch on a plain sheet of printer paper with a 0.5 mechanical pencil

2. Clean Line Art traced on to a new crisp piece of paper with the use of a light table and 0.5 and 0.3 mechanical pencils.

3. The Line Art after it has been scanned in and cleaned up. Once the lines are clean, I adjust any upsetting placement or proportion problems that I didn't catch while drawing the sketch. I prepare the line art for the coloring stage in Photoshop, but I color my pictures in Paint Shop Pro. (Don't ask why, its a long story.)

4. Flats! Flat base colors for the subjects, the props, the background... this is when the layers start happening...

5. Shading the subjects. Zane and Atticus here probably have about 3 layers each. The clothing, towels and books have 2-3 layers as well.

6. Working on the background. I have to start working on the bed and the background so I can make important decisions regarding the mood, shadows and lighting.

7. Stuck!! DX

It's a little farther along at this point than what #6 shows. The props and background are colored. Some of the highlights have been added... I just can't decide on the exact mood, and time of day to finish this baby off. Do I want it during the day, with daylight coming in from the windows... or in the evening with a shadowed scene and a soft yellow/orange glow from the lamp?
That's the problem with CGing... at any moment you can change everything, but with so many options, it becomes hard to choose just one way to go sometimes.

Making gift art for people I care about is one of the most difficult things I do. It's not so much the pressure of "I love you so much, I hope you like this picture I made for you!!", though that definitely does factor in. No, my big problem comes from within, where I like the person so much, I want to make the best thing I can for them! I want to make something that epitomizes as much gratitude and appreciation that I have as possible. :iconiloveyouplz:

Ugh... sadly I find that the more I like somebody, the harder it is to make a drawing for them. (Works the same way in regards to fan art of characters I love, btw. The more I love them, the harder it is to draw them, because I want to give them everything I have.) How Unfair is that!!? :slamhead:

Anyone else have that problem? :depressed:
